The Ad Blue Shear Valve: Risbridger – Engineering for the future
In case you’ve never heard of AdBlue, it is a colourless and non-toxic liquid made from a solution of water and urea. It benefits the environment and reduces emissions by converting harmful NOx from diesel vehicles into harmless nitrogen and steam. According to studies done by the World Health Association, NOx emissions are known to aggravate asthma.
Lets have a look at NOx, in atmospheric chemistry, NOx is a generic term for the nitrogen oxides that are most relevant for air pollution, namely nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These gases contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain, as well as tropospheric ozone.
NOx gases are usually produced from the reaction among nitrogen and oxygen during combustion of fuels, such as hydrocarbons, in air; especially at high temperatures, such as occur in car engines. In areas of high motor vehicle traffic, such as in large cities, the nitrogen oxides emitted can be a significant source of air pollution. NOx gases are also are produced naturally by lightning.
So far so good. And furthermore, Since 2005, legislation in Europe has demanded a drastic reduction of NOx emissions and vehicle manufacturers are bound by ever-stricter regulations. The Euro 6 emissions standard in 2016, affecting diesel cars in particular, means that car makers have had to focus on minimising harmful nitrogen-oxide emissions.
Hence the requirement for Ad Blue. The most recent diesel-powered cars use SCR technology to inject microscopic quantities of Ad Blue into the flow of exhaust gases, enabling it to break down mono-nitrogen oxides.
There is a downside, however: Adblue is dangerous to the environment and must not escape into ground water or drainage. So how can this be prevented?
Risbridgers’ new and improved stainless steel Adblue shear valves are the answer to large spills caused by pump knock-overs. By shearing in half and stopping the flow from both the pump and dispenser they are able to prevent leakage of Adblue product onto the forecourt when the dispenser is knocked over. As a result, they not only prevent product loss but also protect the environment.
AdBlue Shear Valve Specification:
- Full flow low pressure drop design
- Full shut-off with minimal bending or shear movement
- Seals upstream and downstream on impact
- Tested shut-off activation force = 415 Nm bending moment
- Cylindrical body fits through and allows sealing with standard membrane seals
- OPTIONAL stainless steel under pump valve, for quick and easy isolation/line testing above and below the shear valve.
